Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio has urged
the electorate not to allow zoning to determine the winner of the 2015
governorship election in the state.
Akpabio, who said this in Uyo on Tuesday during the
Gala Night for the Democracy Day celebration, stated that he had no
candidate for the election.
He said it was not right to restrict governorship to a
particular area, adding that what the state needed was a governor who
could perform.
He said, “We must ask ourselves what we want in 2015. That will help us to pick the best.”
Meanwhile, a lawyer and human rights activist, Mr. Okon Edet, said Oron should produce the next governor.
He said, “We cannot continue to dwell together as a state if a governor does not come from Oron in 2015. We have been cheated.
“Oron is not in the scheme of things. We have been
deprived as a people; this is our turn, it is our time, there is no
scheming or politicking that can work.”
It is learnt that Ibibio had their turn when Mr.
Victor Attah became a governor, and now Akpabio, an Annang is the
present governor. It is also said that
Oron has not produced a governor since the creation of the state in 1987.
Meanwhile, Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Umana Umana, has said he is qualified to contest the election.
