Oku Ibom Ibibio Tussle: Udoedehe Dumps Akpabio Udoukpa, Declares Support for Edidem Umoette

Former senator James Akpanudoehe has publicly declared his recognition of the paramount ruler of Etinan, His Royal Majesty, Akwa Edidem Ime Dickson Umoette as the Oku Ibom Ibibio IV, says a news report published in Global Concord, a local tabloid in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
“It has been my wish to come and meet you and your council as my fathers and custodians of Ibibio culture, values, and peacemakers in Akwa Ibom State to declare my support to your throne as Oku Ibom Ibibio IV,” Udoedehe who was the ACN 2011 governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State reportedly told Edidem Umoette when he paid the monarch a visit in his palace to officially invite him and other Ibibio traditional chiefs to the burial of his late mother.

“I have followed trends of events and have totally aligned myself with the wishes of Ibibio people and their traditional rulers regarding the throne which you now sit,” the former senator was quoted as saying. “So my visit to your palace is to make known to my supporters exactly the direction to follow and who to pay their
homage to as the traditional leader of Ibibio people.”

The Oku Ibom Ibibio is the highest traditional leadership among the Ibibio ethnic group in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. The stool has been a subject of lingering tussle between the paramount ruler of Onna, Edidem Akpabio Udo Ukpa and other paramount rulers in the state who are opposing his ascension to the influential throne.

Udoedehe’s recognition of Umoette looks good to fetch the monarch some measure of goodwill among the Ibibio people because of the former’s senator’s political clouts.
