Akwa Ibom Government has empowered Abak Women Cooperative
Society with a revolving loan of N10 million.
In addition, the state government has announced plans to
construct and inaugurate former Independence Hall, Abak at the site of the
demolished prisons by December this year.
Akwa Ibom Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio announced this
Wednesday during a ground-breaking ceremony of the former Independence Hall,
Abak and the symbolic demolition of old Abak Prisons in line with the uncommon
transformation of the state through massive development.
Akpabio remarked, "We are building a brand new prison
in Abak Local Government Area and the construction is ongoing. In line with the
uncommon transformation of the state through massive development, we decided to
build a new prison because the location of the old prison was by the
road".
He noted that "We would change the entire terrain of
the old site of the prison, and from here we can have a magnificent view of the
suspended bridge in Abak. We would also dualise from here to East-West Road,
and that would be completed by the next administration.
"An independence hall would be built at this site of
the old prison. The hall would be for meetings and for women to have their
quarterly celebration. The hall will come with modern facilities and the site
would also include a new roundabout, a new road that would be linked to the
suspended bridge and street lights from here to Uyo", the Governor said.
Akpabio, who hinted that the hall would be commissioned by
December this year, recalled that already N19 million was paid as compensation
for the building of the former Independence Hall, Abak, thanking the Nigerian
Prisons Service for doing a good job and for sustaining peace in the state.
