Gov. Godswill Akpabio |
By Nse Peter
Governor Godswill Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media,
Anietie Ekong has described as ‘blatant lie’, the allegation that the governor
ordered the detention of Odudu Ukpanah, the son of the slain outspoken
chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State, Albert
Ukpanah.
Albert Ukpanah, known for his opposition against Godswill
Akpabio’s senate ambition, was shot dead in March last year at his home in Abak
Local Government Area by unknown gunmen. The police later arrested his only
son, Odudu, in connection with the murder. Odudu, a UK-trained petroleum
management expert, has spent more than nine months in Prison. But the family
says he is innocent of the accusation. They suspect that those who are after
Odudu are the same people who killed his father.
Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Anietie Ekong said
instead of attacking the governor, people should “appeal to all those involved
in the dispensation of justice to the Ukpanah’s family to do so expeditiously.”
“Let me appeal that calling Governor Akpabio names on the
internet and falsely claiming he ordered the arrest of Odudu will not bring
justice to the family,” Mr. Ekong posted on Facebook, in response to enquiry
about the governor’s role in the detention of Odudu Ukpanah.
Ekong said, “From what I had gathered the father was
gruesomely murdered by unknown assailants and being the only one who was
reportedly with the father at the time of the incident, the Police may have
felt he has a case to answer and probably throw more light on the matter.”
He said Odudu’s case is pathetic and that he is confident
the court will free him if he is innocent.
But a young human right activist in Akwa Ibom State, Inibehe
Effiong says there is nothing wrong in people attacking Governor Godswill
Akpabio over the detention of Odudu Ukpanah.
Mr. Inibehe Effiong told Think
Akwa Ibom! in an exclusive interview that the people attacking Akpabio over
the Internet are doing so out of provocation for the continuous detention of
Odudu Ukpanah. “If Akpabio had conscience, Odudu would not have been detained
in the first place given the plausible, cogent and verifiable fact that his
father was assassinated by ‘politically motivated assassins,’ said Inibehe
Effiong. (Click here, to read
Inibehe’s interview)
Effiong who is Convener
of the Coalition of Human Rights Defenders ( COHRD ) said the
Police Investigation Report stated that the late PDP chieftain was killed by
‘politically motivated assassins’ and that the report suggested that further
investigations be carried out to find the real killers of Ukpanah. He said
there have been countless assassinations in the state, and asked, “are they
also saying that the other persons that have been murdered in the state were
also killed by their children?”
Insulting Akpabio from today till tomorrow wouldn't change anything really. Please table your grievances to the appropriate quarters. Akpabio is no murderer. Akpabio keep striving to give the people of Akwaibom state the good life. People should stop all these allegations.
ReplyDeleteafter Reading through all these, it means people will and can actually blame Akpabio for every single person ever jailed! people just conclude that they know the truth already while the police are carrying proper investigations. This is pathetic and i advice that Akpabio should be left out.
ReplyDeleteThis is so typical of Nigerians. A boy steals fish, they blame the government, A boy kills neighbours dog, they blame the government. This case, he was accused of killing, the police, according to protocols, arrested him as first suspect and the public is saying Akpabio ordered the arrest. So it is Akpabio that will teach the police their job? is it Akpabio that tells who and who is to be arrested? I wonder when people made him the IG of police. Na wah. To be frank, calling him names wont change a thing. That young man is guilty until proven otherwise.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Mr. Anietie Ekong view that instead of attacking the governor, people should “appeal to all those involved in the dispensation of justice to the Ukpanah’s family to do so. it is the right way to go rather than pouring baseless accusations on the Governor. its completely ridiculous
ReplyDeleteCalling the Governor names does not and will not change anything. if the Law enforcement bodies involved in the case have reason to suspect the son, then they are doing so based on findings they may have made. i don't see how this concerns the Governor, or which day he became the Police that he is now responsible for the release of Ukpanah's son.
ReplyDeleteIn reply to Mr Effiong's comments in this article "are they also saying that the other persons that have been murdered in the state were also killed by their children?”
ReplyDeletewhy are your question being directed to the Governor and not the Law enforcement agencies? or do you not have a brain to understand how the system works? i guess your mindset is that the Gov is to be the Police, SSS, Road safety, Sanitation.......... abi? metechew!!!
Blame it on the Government, yeah!, that's the Nigerian way. one day they would ask the Governor to come and do meh guard for them in their homes, metechew!!!
ReplyDeletefor all those idiots running their mouths about the Governor, why don't they take their complaints to the Police as they are in fact the ones responsible for handling such matters. or are they afraid of getting shot or detained? SHM Nigerians!!
People and their ridiculousness! I wonder when Nigerians would learn to be appreciative.Akpabio is busy slaving himself to give the people of Akwaibom state a better life, still yet some miscreants sit at a corner dabbling into all sorts of mischief to bring him down. All the insults been hauled at Akpabio still wont deter him from working to see that the state becomes a model state.
ReplyDeleteThis Mr. Inibehe Effiong must be a quack activist if he's claiming the deceased's son shouldn't have been detained in the first place. I'm not saying he should be jailed wrongly but if he happens to be a suspect at the time of the crime, then thats the appropriate thing to do by the police. I hope the true culprit is found and the innocent vindicated.
ReplyDeleteA lot of these journalists and activist just try to gain relevance by slinging mud at the government over everything. I don't see how a case like this should involve the governor. Is he now the chief of police? is he a lawyer and a judge too? can they just leave the man alone?? Ha!
