Akwa Ibom Community Threatened by Gully Erosion

A Journalist in Uyo, Mr Etorobong Inyang, has requested the Akwa Ibom State Government to assist the residents of Bassey Attah and Asutan streets in Uyo who are being threatened by gully erosion.

 His request came as a result of the order given to the affect residents by the State Commissioner of Environment, Barr. Ekong Sampson asking them to vacate their affected homes and to safer environs.

Etorobong who made a post on his Facebook wall, June 29, 2020, lamented about the plight of the residents. In his post, he wrote.

 “The commissioner for environment, A'Ibom state is asking residents of Bassey Attah and Asutan streets under erosion threats to relocate to save areas just like that?

“I'm always #justthinking”

Idongesit Ashameri ,  the Akwa Ibom State Correspondent at Independent Newspapers Ltd in her reaction to his post also wrote.

“Has any alternative been provided? Please give some details. No one would expect families to relocate to nowhere.”

Ekerete Assiak asked if the property owners should wait for them to be told to vacate the area.

“Does the owner of that house need to be told to relocate?”

Rachel Kufreabasi Nse a Buharist also wondered why people where still living in the affected area.

“Are people still living in that death trap?”

Unless some urgent majors  are taken to the affected streets, the likelihood that they may be cut off from the rest of the society is imminent following the gully erosion that is fast spreading and eaten up the areas in the state.
