Nigerians condemn Akpabio for claiming his wife ‘produced’ A’Ibom PDP governorship candidate

Governor Godswill Akpabio

By Nse Peter
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State is under fire for claiming that his wife, Unoma, ‘produced’ the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel.

Governor Akpabio was quoted by the Punch newspaper as saying “Mother Theresa, Mkpouto Akwa Ibom; she is the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, who spotted Udom Emmanuel.”
Akpabio made the remarks during the inauguration of PDP campaign organisation in Uyo on Tuesday night.

Many Nigerians who reacted to the report of Akpabio’s comment accused the governor of exhibiting arrogance and lack of respect for Akwa Ibom people.
“I am not surprised. Akpabio is too arrogant. He controls akwa ibomites as if they can't think by themselves. Vote this arrogant and corrupt family out for (a) better change,” wrote one Kinky on the Punch website.

Another commentator who identified himself as Clay on the Punch website, wrote: “Akpabio, this is an uncharitable statement and avoidable error for that matter. You have succeeded in putting this guy on the spot. The implication of the comment is that ‘he will be licking the butt of Mr & Mrs Akpabio’. He might not be a man of his own by admission of this statement. This is quite unfair.”
One commentator wrote, “Akpabio's democracy:  my wife I, are the two that matters.”

Another, Dammy Adegoke, liken Akpabio’s wife, Unoma to President Goodluck Jonathan’s wife, Patience, and added “What is it about this PDP leaders that make them become woman wrapper”.
Yet another commentator, Ediomo Job, stated: “What an arrogant person and a senseless thing to say. What is he doing? Trying to play God?”

Tugbi: “Very Arrogant! This is part of indiscipline Buhari is talking about. Your wife will vote him, while Akwa Ibomites will vote Umana Okon Umana.”
Dele Odugbemi: “Godswill Akpabio has played God with his arrogant statement but God's judgment will prevail in Akwa Ibom as He will decide the next governor through the majority votes of the people and not your wife you have placed above almighty God.”

Moses Musa : “This Akpabio has become a clown.”
Tobby: “Can you imagine the arrogance? The people do not matter in Akwa Ibom state, according to Akpabio. What does is the blessing of the outgoing governor? When I read this trash and the video ranting on the PDP rigging formula, I understand the reasons behind elements like him thinking Jonathan will win come 2015. Akpabio and his likes should be ready for the shocks of their lives as Nigerians will not only vote out the PDP but will also defend their votes.”

Austine Okon: Governor Akpabio, you are my governor, I like you as person because of the transformation you brought to us in Akwa Ibom. You are indeed a performer. But you cannot and should never play god and make statements that you should not be making. Democracy is about choice, it is about the people and who they want. Allow them to decide that by their votes and not by your wife or by you, you do not possess the monopoly of wisdom to do that. Stop playing god so that you do not destroy what you have done. It is this same imposition of candidates that is going take away the presidency from PDP and it may not be different in Uyo.

  1. The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Godswill Akpabio, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in the state, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, was discovered by his wife, Unoma.

Describing his wife as ‘Mother Theresa’ and a jewel during the PDP campaign inauguration in Uyo on Tuesday night, the governor commended his wife for her foresight in spotting Emmanuel.

He said, “Mother Theresa, Mkpouto Akwa Ibom; she is the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State, who spotted Udom Emmanuel.”

The governor also said that nobody could become a governor of a state without the support of the incumbent governor.

He stated that he was successful because he was a part of former Governor Victor Attah’s succession plan.

Akpabio noted that a candidate could only emerge from a system if the incumbent governor supports him.

He added that it was Attah who encouraged him to be governor. The governor revealed that the former governor of Akwa Ibom State had wanted him to be his deputy so that he could take over from him in 2007.

Akpabio revealed that the grouse of some of the 22 aggrieved PDP governorship aspirants in the state was that a sitting governor had never produced a successor in the state and that his case should not be an exception.

“It was the then governor that produced me. I was a commissioner for five and a half years. I stayed until it was time for me to resign like the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Udom Emmanuel, resigned. Attah gave me his blessings. I went with my wife. I gave him a drink. I said, sir, I am now coming out to contest for your position.”

The governor also stated that he asked the deputy governor of the state, Valerie Ebe, not to contest for the 2015 governorship election.

  4. I don't understand why people should rush to conclusion without having the facts. I was in the room where the Governor made the statement that has been restated out of contest. The Governor said "I can see my wife, the First Lady, Mrs Ekaette Umoma Akpabio, who [first] spotted Udom Emmanuel." And the so called journalists are writing that the Governor said it was his wife who produced Mr. Emmanuel . How is that possible. Is she the Party Delegates? Please write the truth. Your write up is sickening.
