A’Ibom Govt House Driver Arrested With AK-47 Rifle

Police in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, Tuesday, arrested an unnamed Government House driver with AK-47 Rifle inside a white Toyota Hilux truck he was driving.

The incident which took place on the road besides Amity Hotels, Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, scared motorists and passers-by as policemen fired gunshots into the air while ordering the driver of the unmarked truck to step out from the vehicle.

A woman who sells fruits by the edge of the road told Think Akwa Ibom! that the rifle was on the passenger’s seat in the front of the truck when police surrounded it.

It is unclear if the police acted on tip off.

An eyewitness told Think Akwa Ibom!, “He (the arrested driver) told them (police) the gun belongs to a mobile policeman attached to his boss in Government House, and that the policeman left the gun inside the car and went inside Government House.

“He said he drove out of office in a hurry to pick something for his boss. That was why he couldn’t wait for the mobile policeman.”
