APPLY: 2015 MILES MORLAND FOUNDATION WRITING SCHOLARSHIPS FOR AFRICANS

Deadline: October 31, 2015
Miles Morland Foundation (MFF) is currently accepting applications from young African writers for the 2016 writing scholarship. It can be difficult for writers, before they become established, to write and to earn a living outside writing at the same time. To help fill this need the MMF aims to each year award three Morland Writing Scholarships for fiction and one Morland Scholarship for non-fiction.

Eligibility
The Scholarships were open to anyone who had been born in Africa or both of whose parents were born in Africa.

Scholarship/ Benefits
  • The Scholars will receive a grant of £18,000, paid monthly over the course of one year. In return for this it is expected that the Scholars will pay to the Miles Morland Foundation 20% of whatever they subsequently receive from what they write during the year of their scholarship. During this scholarship, scholars are required to submit by e-mail at least 10,000 new words every month until they have finished their book
  • Each of the winners will be offered the opportunity to be mentored by an established author or publisher who will give help when sought on the progress of their book and comments as to how it succeeds in meeting its objectives.
How to Apply
The following documents are required for a complete application
  • A submission of between 2,000 and 5,000 words as a Word document from work that has been published and meets the conditions set out above;
  • A description of fewer than 500 words about the new book you intend to write;
  • A scan of an official document showing that you, or both of your parents, were born in Africa;
  • A brief bio of fewer than 300 words;
