African Church pastor: I’m against re-election of state lawmaker because he doesn’t share money

A pastor with the African Church in Akwa Ibom State, Rev. Richard Peters, shocked his followers on different social media platforms on Sunday when he said that his constant attacks on a lawmaker in the state was because of the lawmaker’s refusal to share money to people.

Rev. Peters has vowed to use Facebook and other social media sites to sustain his verbal attack on Hon. Monday Eyo, the member representing Uyo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

The lawmaker is seeking for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket to run for a second term in office in 2019.

Rev Peters has become an infamous name in political discourse in the state because of his penchants for controversial remarks which has prompted many people to question his commitment to his priestly calling.

He is known to have fiercely attacked critics of Governor Udom Emmanuel, as well as chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) whom he has personal disdain for, and has repeatedly dubbed Hon. Eyo “a sleeping House member”.

Rev. Peters said, “After service today Cavil Uduak Inwang chatted with me to know why I voiced my opinion against the second term bid of this dumb lawmaker, I gave him my honest reply, “he is very stingy”.

Though most pastors in the state, just like in other parts of the country, depend on politicians for tithes and assistance, people who spoke with Think Akwa Ibom! said the clergy crossed the line of decency by publicly calling the lawmaker stingy.

“If you beg someone for money and the person refuses to give you, must you come out in the open to call him names?” said Mr. William Ekanem, a public affairs analyst in Uyo.

“This reverend, if at all he has been ordained by his church, is a disgrace to the Christian community in the state. I wish his church could call him to order before he causes more damage,” he said.
