REVEALED! Senator Etang Umoyo may contest for governor in 2015

By Nse Peter

Senator Etang Umoyo who represented Eket Senatorial District in the ill-fated third republic may have joined the growing number of politicians from the Eket Senatorial District jostling for 2015 PDP governorship ticket in Akwa Ibom State.

Etang Umoyo who through his vantage position as chairman, Eket Senatorial District Forum has been one of the main campaigners for the zoning of the governorship in Akwa Ibom to Eket Senatorial District in 2015. He is from Esit Eket Local Government Area.

A source who hinted THINK AKWA IBOM! about Umoyo’s ambition didn’t want his name mention because, according to him, the former senator is quietly consulting party leaders for now, and that he has not been authorized to speak on the matter.

“Yes, I can assure you, he will. He will run (for governor). He is well qualified, he has the experience and the goodwill of the people of Eket Senatorial District,” said the source, confidently.

In February, 2012, during an interview with Vanguard newspaper, when asked if Eket Senatorial District has a candidate that will be generally acceptable to the entire Akwa Ibom State, Etang Umoyo reportedly said, “no, we do not have a candidate. That will create a very serious problem. An activity that is going to take place in 2015, you don’t bring out a candidate and brandish. It is in the nature of this business that that candidate will be killed before then,”

Apart from Etang Umoyo, other notable politicians from Eket Senatorial District in the race for the Akwa Ibom governorship in 2015 are the current commissioner for Ministry of Local Government & Chieftaincy Affairs, Barr. Effiong Abia, the former vice chairman of PDP in the state, Bishop Samuel Akpan, the immediate past deputy governor of the state, Obong Nsima Ekere and the current senator representing the district, Mrs. Helen Esuene. Others are: Bar. Assam Assam and Okpolum Etteh who is currently representing Esit Eket/Ibeno state constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.
