2015: Udom Emmanuel’s declaration off to bland start

Mr. Udom Emmanuel

By Effiong Ekong, Uyo
The declaration of interest by Mr. Udom Emmanuel, former secretary to Akwa Ibom State Government, to run for the office of governor of the state, took off to a weak start today at the Uyo township stadium. The rally, which harped on the theme of “sustainable development,” was without most of the major political actors in the state. Notable names at the rally that were not serving appointees of the state government were about three, namely, former milad, Idongesit Nkanga; former minister of housing and urban renewal, Chief Ndueso Essien; and Senator Anietie Okon.

None of the founding members of the party in the state showed up. Virtually all the party elders and stakeholders stayed away. It was a somewhat forlorn gathering.
The wife of the state governor, Mrs Unoma Akpabio, who sought all the limelight, repeatedly greeted the rally in Igbo. Her husband, Governor Godswill Akpabio was conspicuously absent at the event, maybe in deference to the ban on political endorsement of aspirants in the party by the National Working Committee of the PDP.

Udom himself, not known for rhetorical eloquence, mouthed a few platitudes about continuity and unity of the state. As usual, he suffered many hiccups on name recognition.
The entire event passed as an anti-climax.
