Sergeant Ating Eminue, 24, of Lawrenceville, GA, died Sunday morning outside an Atlanta homeless shelter, shot by an unknown attacker. His family says someone confronted him while he tried to give away shoes to the homeless and shot him multiple times.

SGT Eminue and his family came to the United States from Nigeria 15 years ago for a better life. He served six years in the Georgia Army National Guard, deploying three times, according to information provided by Guard spokeswoman Ashlie Shrewsbury.
He most recently served with 877th Engineer Company, based out of Augusta, and made deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2010, 2013 and 2014. He served previously with 848th Engineer Company.
