Godswill Akpabio, over-talkative politician in Nigeria history

This photo of Joaquim from Angola represents what Akwa Ibom people refer to as ‘inua ekpat’ (basket mouth). Inua ekpat means someone who is loquacious.

Godswill Akpabio is perhaps the most loquacious politician in the history of Nigeria, and most times he gets really ridiculous and embarrassing when making public speeches without reading from prepared scripts.

2015 governorship poll: Oro give Udom Emmanuel red card

Mr. Udom Emmanuel, Akwa Ibom SSG

It seems the Akwa Ibom SSG, Mr. Udom Emmanuel may have met a brick wall and may be pretty difficult to secure the political support of the Oro ethnic group for his 2015 governorship ambition, going by the position of Oro as reported in the Sensor, a community newspaper in Akwa Ibom State.
And yet the question is, if Udom Emmanuel, as it is, can’t get the support of Oro, and that of the majority of Ibibio in both Eket and Uyo Senatorial Districts, including some parts of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District like Abak Five, Ini and Ikono local government areas, what magic will Governor Godswill Akpabio do to install him as the next governor of the state?

Time, only time, will tell.

Akwa Ibom people curse Aniekan Umanah’s younger brother for calling Attah senile, commissioner yet to disassociate self from derogatory remarks

Mr. Uwem Umanah

By Nse Peter
Angry Akwa Ibom people over the weekend took to the social media to rain curses on Mr. Uwem Umanah, the younger brother of the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aniekan Umanah for describing former governor of the state, Obong Victor Attah as senile.

The news of Uwem Umanah’s derogatory remark against Obong Victor Attah was first reported by Think Akwa Ibom! which culled the remarks from a mail he (Uwem Umanah) sent to an online discussion group called Ibom Chronicle.
In his mail, Uwem Umanah had questioned the rationale behind Ibibio people orgainising a grand reception for Attah almost 14 years after the former governor left power.

“My problem is that they (UOU and OBA) have chosen to take advantage of Attah's age, and senile disposition,” Uwem Umanah said in the mail which he also sent to three other notable online discussion groups – TalkHard, AkwaGlobal, and NaijaObserver – hoisted on Yahoo! platform.
He went on to say, “The old man doesn’t know that these guys wanna rubbish him, by using the ‘reception’ to further their selfish political ambition! What was UOU and OBA’s relationship with Obong Attah when they were in government? Oh they have suddenly realized that the old man deserves to be celebrated, or that Ibibio should be united, because they want to occupy the hilltop mansion?”

When other commentators in the forums objected to his choice of words and persuaded him to retract his statement, Uwem Umanah stood his ground and gave his own definition of senility, thus: “In my context, senility means, ‘Weakness of the brain resulting from old age’. Having defined senility, how many elders do their brains get stronger from their 70s? While I don't expect mine to be, Attah's can't be either!”
Akwa Ibom people immediately reacted with torrent of criticisms and curses on Uwem Umanah as soon as they read about his remark.

Think Akwa Ibom! brings to you unedited reactions from some of the readers.

2015: ‘Nobody can impose candidate on Akwa Ibom’ – Obong Bassey Albert Akpan

Obong Bassey Albert Akpan

Former Akwa Ibom State Finance Commissioner Obong Bassey Akpan  is a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He spoke with Kazeem Ibrahym in Uyo, the state capital, on his aspiration, zoning and other partisan issues.

Why are you running for the governorship when you are not favoured by zoning?

I want to say that I have consulted widely and am still consulting and I must say that, based on the collective feelings of the good people of Akwa Ibom State, there is a consensus that I should serve them in office as governor of the state. So far, I have visited about 24 local government areas and I would formally declare after covering the remaining seven councils. Power comes from God and He gives it to whoever He pleases. My prayer is that God should give us a governor who loves Akwa Ibom. Akpabio has done well; he is a good governor, but God should give us a better governor that will take the state to the next level. I am not going to be a governor by zoning, but I will be by Divine prophecy and if you feel that prophecy is not good or that it came from a false prophet, then I leave it to God to decide, because the Bible said that who is he that has spoken and it comes to pass when the Lord of Host has not commanded it. David in the Bible did not become a king by zoning, when God sent Prophet Samuel to go to the House of Jesse, God said I have found for my people a king in the House of Jesse. When Samuel got there, he thought it will be the first son which was zoning, Samuel thought it will be the second son and that was zoning and that applied to the third, while the Bible did not tell us what David’s position was, Samuel only asked if there was any one remaining and was told there was one in the bush taking care of the sheep and David became a king not by zoning, but by Divine prophecy.
